In the Crosshairs: Georgia Healthcare

The state of Georgia spends a lot of money on healthcare per year—over 40 Billion dollars per year to be exact. This, though is not strange—healthcare costs are increasing nationwide. Georgia, though, is well above the national average in its growing healthcare costs (they are growing at about 10% per year). To further confound the problems in Georgia, their health insurance problems have reach critical levels. Over 1.7 million people in Georgia have no health insurance. Since 2000, the percentage of Georgia residents with health insurance has dropped steadily, with them now over 10% below the national average. 2 out of 3 people in Georgia do not have private healthcare.

Georgia Lt. Governor Casey Cagle has this to say about Georgia healthcare going forward:

"We need to pursue incremental changes that gradually lower the cost of health care, limit its tendency to increase in cost exponentially, and make it possible for every Georgian to understand the importance of being insured and purchase affordable insurance products."
